Background of the study

Email automation has revolutionized digital marketing by enabling online retailers to streamline communication, personalize messages, and optimize campaign performance. In Abuja, Nigeria, online retailers are increasingly relying on automated email systems to enhance marketing efficiency by delivering timely, relevant, and targeted content to consumers (Eze, 2023). This technological advancement allows retailers to nurture leads, promote products, and foster customer loyalty through consistent, data-driven interactions. Automated email campaigns facilitate improved segmentation and analytics, resulting in more effective marketing strategies and higher return on investment (Ibeh, 2024). However, despite these advantages, challenges such as email deliverability, content fatigue, and integration with other digital marketing tools remain. This study critically analyzes the impact of email automation on marketing efficiency within an online retail environment. It examines the relationship between automation practices and campaign performance while exploring the operational challenges that may impede optimal results (Udeh, 2025).

Statement of the problem

Online retailers in Abuja encounter challenges in achieving maximum marketing efficiency through email automation. Although automation enhances consistency and personalization, issues such as poor deliverability rates, user disengagement, and technical integration hurdles can compromise campaign performance (Eze, 2023). This study aims to explore the extent to which these challenges affect marketing outcomes and identify gaps between the theoretical benefits of email automation and its practical implementation. By investigating these issues, the research seeks to provide strategic insights into how online retailers can optimize their automated email campaigns to achieve better marketing efficiency (Ibeh, 2024).
